In August 2007, the FDA notified the makers of Celestial Seasonings Herbal Teas, that some of their teas violated federal regulations that prohibit the use of stevia as a food additive. There were no solid references to support their position, but their concern was that "Literature reports have raised safety concerns about the use of stevia."

This is a blatant contradiction for the FDA, because they already recognize stevia as a safe dietary supplement. In fact, a GRAS petition (Generally Recognized As Safe) submitted to the FDA over 12 years ago (1995) cited over 900 stevia studies and none of them indicated any safety concerns for humans.

So how can stevia be safe as a dietary supplement, but unsafe as a food additive? It just isn't logical. Stevia can be used in cooking, baking, or in your favorite cup of coffee or tea. The FDA's decision has forced Celestial Seasonings Teas to make an interesting change - their stevia-containing teas will now be called herbal supplements!

Perhaps it's just FDA semantics or as some have suggested, a double standard subject to change when the big guys see the value of using stevia in their products. Some are already developing new beverages and foods that will include stevia as a safe, natural sweetener. So stevia lovers can relax, it's just a matter of time before stevia gains FDA approval as a food additive.
